Tropentag Conferene Berlin 2023

The Tropentag 2023 “Competing Pathways for Equitable Food Systems Transformation: Trade-offs and Synergies” was presented by the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and took place in Berlin from September 20th to September 22nd.

The Tropentag conference is an excellent platform to engage in discussions and networking concerning collaboration on research in tropical and subtropical regions. Therefore, members of the NIFAM project participated and contributed actively to this conference. Dr. Cory Whitney presented the projects of the university of Bonn, including the NIFAM project and Dang To Kien engaged in a panel discussion on "Leveraging Human Rights-Based Action towards Equitable Food Systems", hosted by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). Dang To Kien also presented "Preserving Food Environments and Livelihoods: Transitions and Challenges for the Ca Dong People in Vietnam". Adding depth to the conversation, NIFAM’s Ha Nguyen, Dr. Simone Kathin Kriesemer and co-authors discussed "Nutrition Interventions for Enhanced Child Health Outcomes in Hanoi, Vietnam".

NIFAM Poster presentations

Dang To Kien, our partner from SPERI in Vietnam, presented her work regarding food environment changes for Ca Dong people in Vietnam who have been resettled from their ancestral lands in forest areas to farmlands. The shift in livelihood away from traditional hunting, wild harvesting, and swidden agriculture led to a change in their food environment and a loss of traditional knowledge concerning food plants and animals. The collaboration with stakeholders and policy-makers is intended to investigate and model possible options and consequences of this change in land-use, food environment, and livelihoods.

Nguyen Le Thu Ha presented the collaborative work regarding nutrition interventions in Hanoi, Vietnam, to enhance child health as a poster presentation. A change in the food environment and food availability in Hanoi towards more processed and less nutritionally valuable foods is causing an increase in obesity among Vietnamese children. Participatory maps were developed to inform families about the nutritional situation and gain more information about possible interventions. These interventions regarding school meals, home gardens, and affordable, safe vegetables will be further modeled and developed using decision analysis tools.
