Intervention at Garco 10

Fruit and vegetable selling point

Access to healthy and safe fruits and vegetables is quite difficult for people in urban areas with a low income. The intervention of FAVRI and NIFAM to promote the direct sale of fresh fruits and vegetables on the grounds of companies could improve the worker's health by a better and cheaper access to healthy food.
This intervention led by FAVRI and in cooperation with Bac Hong Safe Vegetable Production and Distribution Cooperative and the Garco 10 company intends to ensure and facilitate the access of fresh and safe vegetables on the company grounds for company workers and their families based on the model developed by NIFAM and FAVRI members. The selling point was inaugurated on August 1st, 2024, and opened three days a week adapted to the workers' schedules. The vegetables are produced under VietGAP and Global GAP standards.

The FAVRI team and Dr. Cory Whitney and Dr. Luu Thi Thu Giang visited the Bac Hong Safe Vegetable Production Cooperative previous to the inauguration of the intervention.

Analyzing the outcomes, opinions, and feedback from all parties, it showed that it is favorable for the company to have healthy and content workers, and the cooperatives benefit from the attention and new clients. Still, the workers are not used to buy vegetables directly from cooperatives and may not be aware of the health risks of vegetables from markets so the acceptance of the selling point could be higher and needs more information and advertising. Furthermore, weather conditions and the distance from the cooperative to the company can be disadvantageous for a continuous and reliable supply. More work needs to be done concerning communication with the cooperatives and workers and information about the health risks of unsafe vegetables.

Nevertheless, this Pilot project is highly promising to improve the nutritional situation of workers and their families in urban Hanoi.

The team of FAVRI (Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute) published the results of their nutrition intervention as part of the NIFAM project and released this informative video to showcase their work.
