I had the privilege to participate in the recent UN Water Conference, held from March 22–24, 2023. This event was historic, marking the first water-focused conference in 46 years since the inaugural one in 1977. Co-hosted by the Governments of Tajikistan and the Netherlands, the conference aimed to conduct a Midterm Comprehensive Review of the Implementation of the UN Decade for Action on Water and Sanitation (2018–2028).

The conference served as a platform to spotlight the significant challenges facing the water sector worldwide. Issues highlighted included the depletion of hydrological resources, the impacts of climate change, inadequate access to sanitation and hygiene, challenges within agriculture and food systems, and the pressing need for sustainable water and sanitation management. Through plenary sessions, interactive dialogues, and various side events, participants explored these issues across different global contexts, gaining a broad understanding of the necessary actions.

One of the conference's most impactful outcomes was the commitment of over 700 pledges from national governments and stakeholders. Participants conveyed optimism and demonstrated strong dedication to accelerating actions toward Sustainable Development Goal 6, as well as other water-related international targets. These commitments will feed into the UN Water Action Agenda, a significant result of the conference that signals real progress in tackling global water challenges.

Additionally, the announcement of a new position, the UN Special Envoy for Water, was a notable highlight, warmly welcomed by attendees. This new role underscores the commitment to follow through on the promises made during the conference and reinforces the prioritization of water-related issues on the global stage.
